Chichester Anna Chaplaincy is a registered charity, wholly reliant upon donations for running costs. It is led by a part-time Chaplain and a Coordinator, assisted by a band of trained volunteers. That training has included safeguarding, dementia awareness and spiritual befriending.
Our name is taken from the account of Simeon and Anna in the gospel of Luke, an elderly couple whom Luke refers to as Prophet and Prophetess. Simeon and Anna were waiting and praying for the arrival of a special person whom God had promised to send to console his people and, with God’s help, they recognised Jesus as that person when he was brought to the Temple by his parents to be presented to God at the age of eight weeks.
Names meant a lot in biblical days. Anna is from the Hebrew name Hannah, meaning gracious. There is a lovely link here: Anna praised God for the child Jesus as Hannah had praised God for the child Samuel. Childhood and old age – the bookends of earthly existence.
